An 18cm, 165 gram Sterling Silver miniature tray by Birks, sitting on three knobbed feet, top engraved "TO / JEAN-PIERRE MULLER / FOR EXCELLENCE / WITH APPRECIATION / AMBASSADOR AND MRS LINDER". Muller was a classically-trained French chef who opened his first restaurant in Algeria, after mandatory French military service in the country's war with France. In 1964, he was invited by Canadian Governor-General Georges Vanier to serve as head chef at Rideau Hall. Shortly thereafter, he was tapped as head chef for the United States Embassy in Ottawa, where he would serve seven ambassadors over the next 17 years - likely having had a hand in catering to some or all of the four Presidential visits to Ottawa during his tenure. Together with his wife, Muller would go on to operate the successful and high-end Ottawa restaurant "Chez Jean Pierre" for two decades until his retirement in 2002; Prime Minister Jean Chretien had his own table at the restaurant. This plate was presented to the Chef by United States Ambassador Harold F. Linder (former President of the U.S. Import-Export Bank), presumably at the end of his posting in July of 1969. A nice memento of a life well-lived, containing 4.90 oz of fine Silver
