A large inkwell by the Gold and Silversmiths Company of London, crafted in the mid-Edwardian period out of the hoof of a racing horse, with heavy Sterling Silver "horse shoe" affixed to bottom, with heavy ornate sterling silver cap, lifelike hair engraving around top, withi inset (removable) Sterling inkwell, accessed by raising a 7cm round hinged silver lid. Top of lid has been engraved: "MAHOMET / BY SELIM / DAM / BY THE CARDINAL / 1898-1906". With four separate London hallmarks at top and bottom, one of which (partially-hidden among "hair" at back of hoof) bears date-mark of 1905. In excellent condition, worthy of further research, and certainly among the most unsual silver-based artifacts we've handled in 35 years of dealing.
