A remarkable two-volume set of the original 1889 Williamson-revised William Boyne work, Trade Tokens issued in the Seventeenth Century in England, Wales and Ireland, published by Elliot Stock of London, comprised of more than 1,500 pages. In sturdy green binding, formerly in the library of the venerable Canadian numismatist John McKay-Clements. Of significant historical value are two document pouches on the inside back-cover of each volume, which contain a virtual treasure-trove of token related notes, invoices and letters between the book's original owner, Lieutenant-Colonel R.J. Carthew, and both the renowned English collector William Gilbert and some of the most important numismatic firms of the era such as Spinks and Baldwins. These tend to range from about 1910 to the late 1920's, and are then complimented by a group of five early letters written to Carthew by John McKay-Clements, over the period 1914-1921. A remarkable window into the scholarly correspondence between a group of early 20th century numismatist, and as such, the most significant literary lot we expect to offer in our sales.
