Obverse: Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Large M between two stars, cross above, officina letter below but obscured by die break, mintmark CON (Constantinople mint) in exergue. Sear(BCV)-19; good VF (34mm, 18.8g).
In 498 AD, Anastasius reformed the coinage of Byzantium and one of the coins created was the follis, valued at 40 nummi. The distinctive large Greek 'M' is the indicator of this denomination
