A remarkable trio of pattern Gold stamp sculptures of the 1976 Montreal Olympics, as struck by Johnson Matthey Mallory for Canada Post, depicting the sporting events of swimming, sailing and rowing. In additional to have common serial numbers of #000000, however, further analysis reveals that the set has actually been struck in .999 Silver, with individual weights of 17.6 grams, rather than 24 grams as indicated on the patterns (note that the final issued gold stamps of this series bear weights of 23.3 grams). From the estate of a former senior Canada Post officer, and clearly patterns produced for consultation during the evolution of the project, without the risk and expense of having pure gold examples circulating in the hands of management. Quite likely unique, and the most important articles pertaining to the 1976 Olympic programs we have had the pleasure of handling in more than 35 years of dealing. (This lot is HST exempt)
