An impressive 76mm, 336 gram 12-sided Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service (CFMDS), awarded by the Chief of the Defense Staff in 2015 to Warrant Officer Craig McPhee. Rev: combined symbols of the three services (the anchor, crossed swords, and flying eagle) topped by the Royal Crown over four maple leaves, "DISTINGUISHED SERVICE" and "SERVICE DISTINGUÉ" around left and right rims; Obv: wreath of laurel and maple leaves around circumference, engraved at center: "WARRANT OFFICER / CRAIG MCPHEE, CD / (RETIRED). Warrant Officer McPhee joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956, and retired from the military in 1982 after postings with Air Transport Command HQ, 41st Norad Division, Canadian Forces School of Intelligence and Security (as an instructor), together with tours at NDHQ and Allied bases in the United States, Germany and Belgium. On his retirement, McPhee founded "Wreaths Across Canada", and in 2011 presided over the first annual wreath laying ceremony that was held at the Beechwood National Military Cemetery. He was awarded the CFMDS in 2015, a medal established to recognize "service of a rare and exceptionally high standard, usually over a long period of time, which accrues great benefit to the CAF as a whole". W.O. McPhee passed in October of 2022, and the organization he founded continues their annual mission of placing a wreath on the headstone of every veteran buried at the National Military Cemetery (NMC) at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa. Medal shows light golden goning, housed in original blue presentation case. The first such example we have seen or handled, and an important piece of modern Canadian militaria
