An original hand-written letter by the controversial educator Egerton Ryerson, penned on May 2nd, 1855, on the subject of separate schools. As Superintendent of Education in Canada West, he is considered to be the founder of the Ontario Public School system. His involvement in the design of the Residential School system, however, has been the subject debate and controversy in recent years. A key textual artifact from this formative period in pre-Confederation Canadian history, with especially interesting reference in the final paragraphs to his views on the Roman Catholic Bishops of the time.
