3) United Kingdom, 1837, Royalty Token, “To Hanover”, Victoria, (Duke of Cumberland). Obv: Duke of Cumberland, riding to take throne of Hannover, 1837. TO HANOVER 1837. Rev: Queen Victoria. VICTORIA REGINA. Since George I, kings of the United Kingdom had also been Kings of the German Kingdom of Hanover. Salic Law governing Hannover did not permit female heir, so when Princess Victoria succeeded to the British Throne in 1837, Hanover fell to the next male heir, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, who was very unpopular in England, due to his opposition to Parliamentary reform, Catholic emancipation, and Victoria’s ascension. These TO HANOVER tokens were struck as a satirical gesture to express public pleasure at the Duke’s departure, for use as card players’counters or gaming tokens. Brass 3g 20 mm.
