6) Portugal, 1988, One Hundred Escudos. Commemorative issue for Golden Age of Portuguese Discoveries - Bartolomeu Dias – Cape of Good Hope. Commemorates the 500 year anniversary of the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope by explorer Bartolomeu Dias, 1488-1988. Mintage: 1,000,000. KM# 642 (1988). Copper-nickel 16.5g 34 mm.
7) Portugal, 1989, Two Hundred Fifty Escudos. Commemorative issue for the 850th Anniversary of the Foundation of Portugal-1139. At the Battle of Ourique (25 July 1139) the Portuguese Prince Afonso Henriques (of the House of Burgundy) defeated in Southern Portugal five Moorish Kings the Almoravid Moors led by Ali ibn Yusuf. Some say the five small shields on the Portuguese coat-of-arms represent the five defeated Moorish kings. KM# 650 (1989). Copper-nickel 23.1g 37 mm.

Luís Fróis (1532-1597) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary, who worked in Japan from 1563, eventually writing the book “Historia De Japam” (“History of Japan”). Mintage: 650,000.
