Portugal, Bronze Medal, INAUGURAÇÃO DO LABORATÓRIO DE FÍSICA E ENGENHARIA NUCLEARES, LISBOA, 1961 (Inauguration of the Nuclear Physics and Engineering Laboratory, Lisbon 1961). Commissioned by the Junta de Energia Nuclear (Nuclear Energy Board) and sculpted by famous Portuguese sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, the medal features intricately decorated design elements throughout. The obverse features a classic atomic design: a man outstretched, with intersecting elliptical orbits representing atomic electrons crisscrossing the field. Around the whole rim, the inscription reads, “ INAUGURAÇÃO • DO • LABORATÓRIO • DE • FÍSICA • E • ENGENHARIA • NUCLEARES • LISBOA • 1961 • ” The reverse displays at the centre the inscription “JUNTA DE ENERGIA NUCLEAR” in a square in the foreground, while in the background, the names of famous scientists are inscribed, such as Pierre and Marie Curie, Newton, Einstein, etc. Specifications: Diameter: 80mm, Weight: 227.4g, Composition: Antiqued Bronze, Edge: Plain. A nice Uncirculated example. A cool piece to add to any collection, especially for those interested in the nuclear age and European medallic themes.
