Brandenburg, Prussia, Silver, ca.1732, a very scarce "Screw-medal" commemorating the reception of Salzburg emigrants to Prussia. After repressing the Protestant minorities in Salzburg for years, the region’s Prince Bishop Leopold Anton von Firmian finally issued an emigration edict on 31st October 1731, which effectively evicted anyone not of Catholic faith from his lands. In the Spring of 1732, over 20,000 Protestants were forced to leave their homes in Salzburg. Prussia was one of several states to welcome the refugees: King Frederick William I provided them with favorable conditions for settlement in Eastern Prussia. This not only allowed him to resettle lands previously depopulated as a result of plague, but also to present himself to the world as a figurehead of the Protestant movement in Europe. The people of Prussia received the migrants with open arms. Medallions like these were produced alongside sermons, texts, poems, songs, and pamphlets commemorating the events and recording the fates of those displaced. Obv: Salzburg Emigrant family leaving their home beneath a ribbon of inscription. Rev: Depiction of King Frederick William I welcoming the refugees beneath another ribbon inscription. Inside: Obverse Cover: hand painted circular map of the Kingdom of Prussia’s lands (“KONIGREICH PREUSSEN”), Reverse Cover: hand painted circular map of Salzburg lands (“SALZBURG”), signed at bottom “Daniel Höckhinger exc. A.V.”. Metal is in overall very fine condition with light traces of cleaning on raised surfaces. Inside, hand painted map disks are in bright, well preserved condition and display a great amount of detail and preservation for the age. German Silver, 22.2g, W: 45mm, H: 0.5mm. NOTE: Offered together with an 1869 Netherlands Five Cents of William III, gVF, which was found inside the medal.
