Republic of San Marino, 1970, Silver Medal Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Birth. Designed by Italian artist and sculptor Guido Veroi and issued by the Secretary of State for Finance and Budget of this microstate, this medal has a limited mintage of 5,000 pieces (medal is #4938). Obverse: Depicts a woman riding an eagle, symbolizing “Gioia Figlia dell’Elisio”(Joy, Daughter of Elysium) from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, while on the left-hand side features the Coat of Arms of the Republic. Along the top of the rim, the inscription reads ‘GIOIA, FIGLIA DELL’ ELISIO’, while along the bottom rim reads ‘REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO’. Reverse: The center of the field depicts Beethoven’s bust, with the inscription ‘OMAGGIO A BEETHOVEN. 1770-1970’ around the top portion and the artist's signature under the bust on the bottom. Specifications: Diameter: 60mm, Weight: 115.1g, Composition: Silver (.800Ag.). The medal includes the original case of issue and the original Certificate of Authenticity. A historically interesting and unique metal from a micro-nation, which should intrigue any collector of world metals and those who appreciate memorabilia from a world-famous classical composer.
