A group of shooting medals and related fonds to Flight Lieutenant Thomas William Gregory, the only person to have won Queen's Medals in two different services. Lot consists of: (1) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association Revolver Champion Medal 1935, 10K Gold by Birks, on suspension bar with blue ribbon, back blank (suspension bar marked "BIRKS 10K"), approximately 17 grams; (2) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association Gooding Prize Medal in 10K Gold by Birks, a crowned 26mm round uniface medal, Beaver over Maple Leaf, arched Rifles to left and right, on multi-coloured striped ribbon with "D.C.R.A." suspension bar at top, back of medal impressed "BIRKS 10K", estimated gold weight of 11 grams; (3) International Pistol Match "Second Place" medal in plated bronze by Blackinton, 32x46mm uniface shield-shaped on short grey ribbon with suspension bar, date unknown though likely 1930's-40's; (4) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association "Grand Aggregate" medal by Birks, bronze, 35x35mm cross with suspension ring, back blank other than impressed "BIRKS" at bottom (late 1930's); (5) Ontario Rifle Association in antiqued Sterling Silver by P.W. Ellis, 39mm, 34.4 grams; Rev: left-facing kneeling early rifleman, raised wreath of Maple Leaves around circumference, Beaver at top; Obv: raised text around rims: "PRESENTED BY THE ONTARIO RIFLE ASSOCIATION", raised text at center: "IN PACE / PARATUS / 1812-37-66", "Sterling impressed at bottom in tiny lettering; (6) National Rifle Association [England] Rifle Clubs medal, 27x40mm oval bronze medal, uniface, with "cut-out" pair of soldiers at center, suspension ring at top; (7) National Rifle Association [England] 1952 Mackinnon Challenge Cup medal, Bisley Meeting 1952, white plated bronze, 48mm; (8) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, bronze medal by Birks, 39mm, somewhat stained and pitted; (9) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association medal by Birks in Sterling Silver, 45mm, 51.5 grams, antiqued finish; Rev: rifleman in prone position on grassy hilltop, facing left, half-clad allegorical female figure standing at side, Dominion shield above-left; Obv: 25x8mm raised rectangular plaque at center (blank)_ on alter, Maple Leaf branches above and below, text around upper rim: "THE DOMINION OF CANADA RIFLE ASSOCIATION", and at bottom: "FOUNDED 1866", housed in original blue Birks card box; (10) Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario bronze medal, antiqued 45mm, by J.R. Gaunt & Son of Montreal; Rev: high-relief Arms of Ontario, text around outer rims: "PRESENTED BY HIS HONOR THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF ONTARIO"; Obv: wreath around circumference raised text at top: "PRESENTED / TO"; in violet hinged Gaunt box; (11) Dominion of Canada Rifle Association "Coates Match" Silver Medal in Sterling Silver by Birks, 45mm, 69.6 grams; Rev: wreath of Maple Leaves around left and right rims, at center an interesting view of seven soldiers, fort in distance four of them prone with rifles, on seated at artist's easel, the remaining two standing in observation; Obv: Maple Leaf wreath encircling around rims, raised text circling center: THE DOMINION OF CANADA RIFLE ASSOCIATION / FOUNDED 1868 / FOR / TEAM COMPETITION / MATCH/ PLACE", with further engraved text: "THE COATES... / 1950"; housed in blue hinged D.C.R.A. box; (12) D.C.R.A. Sterling Medal by Birks, 1936, 62x32mm (including suspension chains), Beaver over Maple Leaf, both over crossed Pistols, "D.C.R.A. / 1936" suspension bar at top; housed in worn black Birks wallet; (13) Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick Medal in Sterling Silver, 50mm round, with suspension ring and short blue ribbon, Birmingham 1930 hallmark; Rev: high-relief portrait at center, raised text around rims: "MAJOR GENERAL THE HON HUGH H MCLEAN KC VD LLD LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF NEWBRUNSWICK"; Obv: NB arms at center-top, raised text: "PRESENTED FOR", small hallmarks at bottom; back or suspension bar impressed: "ELKINGTON / 22 REGENT ST. SW"; (14) New Brunswick Rifle Association silver medal with suspension ring, 30x30mm, 10.3 grams, crossed rifles set against wreath, back engraved "OFFICERS N.B.R.A. 1932", Birmingham 1930 hallmark at bottom; (15) a fancy stitched blazer patch of the National Rifle Association [England], 10x6.5cm, "BISLEY / 1938" at center, some wear to exterior blue felt (Note: Gregory also won the Queen's medal here in 1938, but was ruled ineligible as he was now in the RCAF). Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, then-Private Gregory won the King's Medal for Best Shot in 1938 while a member of the Canadian Machine Gun Corps. In 1955, as a Flight Lieutenant in the R.C.A.F., he would win the RCAF Queen's Medal for Best Shot, becoming the only recipient of Queen's Medals in two different services. Gregory's pair of Medals (together with this trio of Service Medals) were sold at auction in 2017 for $12,000. Lot of 15 medals from this outstanding Canadian marksman, accompanied by a letter from the auctioneer attesting to the provenance of the material.
