A remarkable framed letter of approximately 11x18cm, dated the 18th of December, 1888 and hand-written by Sir. John A. Macdonald to his Private Secretary, Sir. Joseph Pope. In ten lines of clear text (excluding full signature at bottom), the Prime Minister requests with some urgency that Pope attends the Bank of Montreal on morning opening, to arrange for the covering of a $600 cheque written by his wife, Lady Macdonald, that is seemingly at risk of being returned. Written on "EARNSCLIFFE, OTTAWA" stationary, a Victorian manor and home to the first Prime Minister, with lovely clear writing, a pair of vertical and horizontal center-folds crossing at center, and clean fresh paper other than light browning around edges where the matting meets the paper. A rare and desirable artifact of Canada's first Prime Minister, with an unusually personal financial subject-matter. Remarkably, in the uninterrupted custody of the recipient's family for the past 135 years, and worthy of some serious bidding.
