United States of America, 1876 bronze medal commemorating the World’s Exhibition in Philadelphia and the 100 year anniversary of American independence. The World’s Exhibition in Philadelphia was the first to be held in the United States and in North America, taking place between May 10th and November 10, 1876. Throughout the six month event, 37 countries were represented and over 10 million people passed through the exhibition gates. To mark the dual significant occasion, this medal was crafted by well known Boston designer and engraver Henry Mitchell. The obverse of the medal depicts Liberty (personification of America) seated on bricks, holding a shield and offering a wreath over symbols of science, commerce, and learning. Around the rim is framed by thirty-eight stars and four medallions depicting the globe’s continents. Around the reverse rim is inscribed ‘INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION / PHILADELPHIA, MDCCCLXXVI’, while in the center is inscribed ‘AWARDED BY UNITED STATES CENTENNIAL COMMISSION’ in four lines within a wreath. While there is no definitive population reports to determine the number of medals issued, it is believed that thousands were made and distributed to exhibitors, inventors and commissioners whose displays were recognized by the exhibition judges. The medal as a whole displays nice general even dark chocolate brown patina across both obverse and reverse fields, with slight touches of wear in the high points on the obverse. Both sides display beautiful details and craftsmanship to personify the extravagance which went into celebrating this historical international exhibition. Specifications: Diameter: 76mm, Weight: 287g, Edge: Plain. A breathtaking historical American medal from a well known and important Exhibition in both American history and late-19th century history. Those who look to collect significant historical medals should strongly consider adding this piece to their collection.
